Tawas

Tawas Bay Regatta
East Tawas, Michigan
September 16th & 17th, 2017

Check and see who has pre-registered HERE

Everybody loves Tawas and this year will be no exception. The Park Rangers love us (as always), and the site is to die for.

This year, weather permitting, we're planning our distance race on Saturday.  Details will be confirmed in the upcoming weeks.  We traditionally start in front of the Launch Site, with a mid-point lunch at the Tawas City Beach.  Then a shorter race back.  It's a blast.

VENUE
Tawas Point State Park in East Tawas, Michigan. Phone (517) 362-5041.

DIRECTIONS
U.S. 23 to East Tawas. At the north edge of town, by the Big Boy restaurant, turn right on Tawas Beach road. Continue about 3 miles to Tawas Point State Park.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Camping
Camping is available at the race site - there are a few other camping areas within 15-20 minute drive (check here), but there is no way you can beat Tawas Point State Park.  The park includes 175 acres of beautiful lake-surrounded land, providing swimming, playgrounds, picnicking, and 210 modern, grassy campsites. Electricity and heated showers are available.  We typically reserve sites on the SE loop of the park (sites 186-210).  Reservations should be made through the Michigan DNR site at the link below.

Hotels
There are a few hotels in the area within 10 minutes of the launch site.  If you feel you must, check the link here.

HOSPITALITY
Lunch
The mid race lunch break on the beach will not be catered this year, thus no co-pay.  You may either pack a lunch and bring on your boat or buy your own lunch at the Taco Stand on the Beach

Dinner
Saturday evening: Mr. Egerdal will once again provide his sumptuous pulled pork. $0 Copay per person + please bring a dish to pass.  Paper/plastic products will be provided.  We do not have a pavillion for dinner, so please bring folding chairs, and favorite beverages.  We usually have a campfire as well.

If you've already registered (or don't plan to sail) and at some point the number of people joining us for dinner changes, its no problem.

SAILING RULES
CRAM Racing Rules

The below diagram shows the course we raced last year.  You can see where the marks were be set.  Buoys A and B are existing red NOAA buoys, and the rest will be set by the CRAM RC.  Our marks are Orange, so pay attention, there may be other races going on at the same time.  We'll have a traditional windward start to the S Mark.  Final position of the S Mark may vary slightly depending on the wind direction.  If there are changes to the course we will post that information in the upcoming weeks, so please be sure to check back periodically.  Sunday will be standard buoy race.

Click the picture to view the marks overlaid on Google maps.  If you'd like to download the waypoints to your GPS device, the GPX file is here (right click the link and select Save As).  Finally, we made a quick reference sheet for the possible courses and mark positions available at this link.

As always, weather conditions may dictate changes to final details, but this is our target.

Muskegon

Pere Marquette Regatta
Muskegon, MI
July 29th & 30th, 2017

Check and see who has pre-registered HERE

Muskegon's Pere Marquette Park has become one of our favorite venues.  Lake Michigan in mid-summer simply can't be beat:  the sun high and warm, beautiful dunes as a backdrop, the water clear and warm (well - as warm as it gets!), the winds more manageable, and the beaches full.  We launch from a protected area inside the south breakwater and race out on the big lake.

VENUE
Pere Marquette Park, Muskegon, MI. Launching is from inside the breakwater on the south side of the channel. Weather and conditions permitting, racing will be held on Lake Michigan.  Our fallback is Lake Muskegon.

Muskegon

DIRECTIONS

From I96/US31 interchange, take Seaway Drive west about 4 miles.  It will curve north.  Turn left (west again) onto Sherman Blvd for about 3 miles.  Turn right onto Beach St. and follow your way in from there.

RACING DETAILS
Saturday/Sunday are normal buoy races in standard CRAM fashion for all fleets.
  • A VHF radio is not required but is highly recommended to allow communication with the RC in case assistance is needed.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Camping
Both RV and tent camping is allowed onsite in the area designated above.  It may not be glamorous, but it works. There are no hookups or amenities at the camp location, however a large porta-john will be available.  Public restrooms (sorry, no showers) are a short walk away.

There are also several state parks nearby with full camping facilities.  This will be the peak of the summer holiday season, so you'll need to book your site far in advance.  The closest is Hoffmaster State Park (about 15 minute drive).  The other is Muskegon State Park. The latter may seem close - only 100yds across the channel, but its about a 40 minute drive around Lake Muskegon to get there.  Perhaps you can sweet-talk the CRAM boat driver to ferry you?

Hotels
There are a number of hotels in the area.  Check the map here for contact information.

HOSPITALITY
We are planning to have dinner on "The Deck" (formally Captain Jacks) Saturday night.
Of course, don't forget to bring your favorite beverages, and folding chairs!
